Write for Us

Write for Dark Mountain

We publish two print editions of Dark Mountain each year, as well as the Online Edition. Most of the work that appears in our books and on this site comes through open submissions.

If you are interested in writing for us, please read this section carefully.

For each book, we make an open call with a deadline for sending us your work. We encourage submissions from new and established writers and artists, and we particularly encourage unpublished or ‘unknown’ contributors. You can find our most recent call-outs at the bottom of this page – please check the date carefully, however, as the deadline may already have passed.

For announcements about future call-outs, we recommend that you sign up to our mailing list.

Please see our submissions guidelines before you send us work, as well as reading the call for the specific book for which you are submitting.

Throughout the year we also publish new writing and artwork in the Online Edition which reaches hundreds of thousands of readers. If you have an idea for a piece that might find a home here, we would be pleased to hear from you. You can contact our online editor, Charlotte Du Cann, at [email protected]  with a pitch. We have an upper limit of 2,500 words for online pieces. Please note: we only publish poetry if it is part of a story, or is relevant to one of our sections.

We are not yet in a position to pay for all the work that we publish, but we are working towards this. At present, we have a small budget for commissioning guest editors and contributors to featured series on the site, as well as commissioning longer pieces for the books.

Dark Mountain: Issue 25

Our Spring 2024 issue is an anthology of non-fiction, fiction, poetry, interviews and artwork inspired by the struggle for land rights, and by the living land itself.
